Even though the wild popularity of the technique is fairly recent, the “selfie” itself is far from being a purely modern phenomenon. The photographic self portrait is common in the really early days of photography investigation and innovation, when it was frequently more suitable for the testing photographer to act as model too. Actually, the image considered by many to be the first photographic portrait ever shot was a “selfie”. The picture in question was shot in October or November 1839 by an amateur chemist and photography enthusiast from Philadelphia named Robert Cornelius (then 30 years old). Cornelius had set upward his camera at the rear of the family shop in Philadelphia. The picture was taken by him by removing the lens cap and then running into framework where he sat for a minute before covering the lens up again. In thus doing, he’d created what’s considered to be the first photographic self portrait. On the back he composed “The first light Graphic ever shot. 1839.”
From the early black and whites of the blue-faced Edwardian girl in her patterned dress as well as the unsmiling visage of photographer Robert Cornelius to the modern day “selfie”, Self portraits have existed for hundreds of years and for the initiating posers of the 1800s, photographic self portraits were radical. !
By 1838, human beings had made their first appearance on movie – an occasion quickly followed by the first “selfie”, which was the work of photographer Robert Cornelius. However, the age of the “selfie” did not really morning until 1900, when Kodak’s ground-breaking Box Brownie Camera appeared on ledges. It was priced at only $1 each and two inch pictures were taken by the cardboard apparatus on 117mm roll film and sold in the millions. The Box Brownie was not expensive, user friendly, and helped to introduce the planet to the idea of the photo.
